This is my place on our blog to post new and exciting things that we will be doing during our three weeks together. My unit’s theme is Peace and we will be learning and practicing how to make our classroom a more peaceful place. We will learn to be inclusive, and enjoy each other’s special qualities. We will read many different storybooks and explore what peace means to us. I hope you are all excited as I am! See you for our first day on March 8, 2010.

The start to our Peace unit has been very successful! Yesterday, we made a web for all the things that we think we know about peace. Then, we learned some new things while reading “The Peace Book” by Todd Parr.

Today we read the book “The Teddy Bear” by David McPhail and discussed different acts of kindness that we could do over the next three weeks for others. All of the students came up with some great ideas, including:
-Listen to others
-Help each other
-Be nice to everybody
-Share what you have
This is a great start to making our classroom a more peaceful place!
Tomorrow, we are spending the whole morning at the Spring Agriculture Show! We are learning about different animals. If we learn something exciting, we will share it on the blog! Thanks everybody for the wonderful comments you have added already.

Look grade one! It’s our new friend George!
My brother Brendan has done such a nice thing by letting us borrow George for the next two weeks. He will be our new “talking stick” while we are having our talking circles, and he will also be a reward for good behavior and acts of kindness. Let’s make George feel at home in our classroom.

As we discussed in class, the UN’s slogan is “Peace is in Your Hands”. Here is an example of an art project we have been working on surrounding this slogan:
We talked about different peace symbols that we knew and then drew them inside our hands. I can’t wait to see all the finished masterpieces!

Yesterday we played a new version of musical chairs…instead of being “out” when you are left without a chair, your classmates must be inclusive and come up with a way to share a chair. One thing I know about this class is that they sure like to dance!!!!
You even had me dancing!
I can’t wait for Monday to learn more about Peace.

This has been a busy week for us, grade ones!! On Monday we started swimming lessons and we wrote about our Peace Heroes. I will add some of them soon because you all did such a wonderful job. We also had our first talking circle and I would like to thank you for being really respectful during it. We followed the talking circle guidelines very nicely and everybody listened well.
Today we watched some cool peace videos! Do you think we should make our own? What are some great ideas that we could put in a video about peace? Some ideas we came up with were music, instruments, dancing, smiling, peace symbols, and much more. Let’s see if we can make a video of our own! Thanks grade one for a great day. See you tomorrow,

Hi everybody! Today is an important day. It is the International Celebration for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. In Regina, we celebrate this day as “Spring Free from Racism”. To spread awareness of the day, we decided to make posters.
They turned out amazing, grade one!! Here are the finished pieces:
We did another activity as a class that involved coloring two happy faces and giving them to somebody that you appreciate, hoping to make them smile.
We had a talking circle to discuss who we gave our happy faces to and the students are doing such a great job.
They respect all the talking circle guidelines, and they know that only the person holding George (our “talking stick”) is allowed to speak. Sometimes it is difficult to sit and listen for a long period of time, but our grade ones are doing so great! Let’s enjoy this last week together and learn as much as we can about peace 🙂

Happy World Water Day everybody! Remember to use less water to help make the environment a more peaceful place for everyone! Here are some other suggestions our grade ones came up with:
-don’t use cars
-pick up garbage
